He Did It!

On Sunday, JMR raced his first half-marathon.  He trained pretty darn hard for this race, so I was excited to see how he would do.  He also ran a very speedy 10k a couple of weekends ago, so I knew it would be a fast race for him 🙂

Pre-Race

On Saturday morning we went to the packet pick-up where JMR got his bib, race shirt, and race schwag. After wandering around the expo for a while, we left to grab lunch and (finally) pick up Lola.  Poor Lola, she was in the shop for a whole month.  Bad owner.  To my credit, I can’t lift heavy things yet, so I couldn’t pick her up by myself.  Plus, it’s not like I am in a rush to get back on the bike since I can’t ride yet either.  After doing some serious resting on the couch, we went to Farotto’s for dinner that night, the place JMR swears helped fuel his speedy 10k race a couple of weekends ago.  Hopefully the mostaccioli will help fuel a good race on Sunday!

Race Day:

5am.  Ugh.  Now I know how JMR feels when he gets up early to sherpa/spectate at my races. I guess it’s just easier to wake up when you’re the one racing because you have pre-race nerves and adrenaline.  I had none of those, except sleepiness.  After bundling up in multiple layers (it was supposed to be 32 degrees at the start) we were off and headed downtown by 6a.  Parking turned out to be pretty easy and we were walking to the start by 6:20.

Ready to race!

Ready to race!

After a porta potty stop and some stretching, it was finally 7a and the racers were off!  JMR was in corral 6, so it took a while for him to cross the start (9 minutes or so?).  The half course is pretty spread out around downtown, so unless you have a bike, there aren’t very many good places to see a runner more than once out on the course and still see them at the finish.  So I decided to walk as far as I could and then just wait to cheer on JMR.  ‘Far’ ended up being the 2 mile mark 🙂  I tried to take a picture but my iPhone photo skills kind of stink.

RNR Mile 2

He’s the blurry one in the white shirt.

Next I was off to get hot chocolate -my fingers were freezing!  There was a coffee shop a few blocks down so I hung out in there for a while and followed JMR’s splits (I signed up to receive text messages when he crossed the start, 5k, 10k, 10 mile and finish).  As I calculated his finish time based on his 5k split and then his 10k split I could see he was speeding up!  If he could keep it up he would make his goal time!  Then when I got the text for the 10 mile split I knew it was time to head to the finish.  I couldn’t figure out which side to cheer him on, one side was blocked off so you couldn’t be right next to the runners and the other side was really crowded.  Finally I just picked a side and waited.  I was getting anxious and nervous.  Soon I spotted JMR headed down the finish line, he was looking really strong!

Once again my awesome photo skills - if you look really close you can see him

Once again, my awesome photo skills.  If you look really close you can see him at the ‘REFEUL’ sign

When I looked at his time I couldn’t believe it!  He beat his goal!  He was hoping to finish in 1:45 and his time was 1:44:38!!!  He said he just wanted to break 2 hours so anything under than that he would be happy with, so I knew he was thrilled with his time.  I met him on the other side of the finish and gave him a huge (sweaty) hug.  He recapped how his race went and how he was feeling (tired but good!) and after hanging out at the finish area for a bit we headed back to the car to go home.

Post Race:

After getting cleaned up we went to Milagro, one of our favorite Mexican restaurants for lunch.  I think Mexican food after races is becoming our tradition.  🙂 Lunch was followed by watching football (well, just JMR) and a nap on the couch.

I was wondering if JMR would still want to run the full in April depending on how his race went, but he said he’s excited and ready!  Hooray 🙂

2014 Race Plans

Well, as disappointed as I am that I’m not able to race my biggest planned race of the year, IMAZ, I am trying to move on and think positively.  Things could have been much worse, as I said before, and I’m lucky that I’m already healing and am cleared to do some activity.  So, the best way I know how to move on and not dwell on what wasn’t meant to be, is for me to plan my next season while I am working on recovering from my injury.  🙂

My immediate thoughts while I was sitting in the club tent hours after my crash was to sign up to volunteer at IMAZ again this year and register for 2014.  However as time went by, I realized that I didn’t really want to spend money three times to go to AZ to do one race!  I already went once to volunteer in 2012, then I would be going again this year to volunteer and finally (hopefully) racing next year!  That is a lot of airfare and hotel costs for one race.  Plus, training this late in the year honestly isn’t fun.  It’s getting cold and dark out earlier and almost everyone else has already wrapped up their triathlon seasons.  I didn’t want to do that again in 2014 so IMAZ 2014 was out.  So what was my next option?

I knew that I really wanted my first full triathlon (140.6 miles) to be an Ironman brand, however that only left me a few options considering almost all of them were already full for 2014.  My three options were: IM Texas, IM Coeur d’Alene and Ironman Louisville.   As I weighed the pros and cons between the three, I realized Texas was going to be too early in the season for me since I wouldn’t get back to fully training until January.  So it was between CdA and Louisville.  Both had good pros and cons, but after sleeping on it for a couple of nights I finally decided that I would do Louisville!

IMLOU It just made sense in that it gave me sufficient time to build up my base and was also only four hours away, so it would be easier for my friends and family to come support me if they wanted to.  I spoke to my coach and we agreed that I would start officially training again in January.  So, until then I am planning on building up my biking endurance and (hopefully) running endurance when I get cleared on November 4th to try to start running.  Dr. O said that running might be uncomfortable still at that point, so hopefully it isn’t too bad and I can push through it to get running again.  Fingers crossed!

So other than planning my next Ironman attempt, I also have a few other races along the way, and the first one I’m getting pretty excited about 🙂

ILMarathon

The Illinois Marathon in Champaign-Urbana on April 26th….and the best part?  JMR is doing it too!!!  I’m so excited to train together (or at least do our long runs together)!!  We had so much fun running together in August and September while he was also training for his first half-marathon on October 27th, so I’m definitely looking forward to that again.  Also, I haven’t run a marathon since 2007, so it will be nice to finally run one again.  Injuries in the past always interrupted my training (I trained for marathons in 2009, 2010 and 2011)…so the theme for this marathon training cycle will be stretching and strength training!

I also plan to do a couple other triathlons, another race I’m pretty excited about, Ironman Kansas 70.3 on June 8th.

IMKSI’ve always wanted to do Kansas, I’m not quite sure why…it’s typically hot and hilly…but I’ve heard such great things about it (plus, it’s a pretty good simulation of IMLOU’s course), so it’s on my list this year and is perfect timing!  It will be a nice tune up race before I get into my heavy training volume in July.  I also tentatively have the ITU World Triathlon Chicago Olympic on June 29th, however depending on my budget, I might not end up going.  Finally my last triathlon on the season will be Ironman Louisville on 8/24!

So that’s what I have planned for 2014 and I am getting pretty excited about it.  I already am reflecting on my training cycle this past year and the mistakes I made that I want to avoid (not getting up early and getting in my workouts and then trying to do two long workouts back to back after work. Ugh.) and also areas I want/need to improve (aka, get my butt in the pool more than 1x a week – no excuses!).  I know there isn’t such a thing as a ‘perfect training cycle’, but in some ways I’m excited to get back out there and try again, especially (knock on wood) having a stronger running base (which is my best area) than I did last year.

Now off to a meeting and then to the gym after work!

Redman Half 2013 Race Recap: Part II (On the mend)

Redman Half 2013 Race Recap Part I

On to Part II…

When we got back to Saint Louis we stopped by my dad’s friend’s house who is a well-respected Orthopedist in the area for his opinion of my x-rays (the hospital sent me home with a disk).  I knew it was bad but deep down inside I was still hopeful that IMAZ was a possibility.  When he pulled up the image I couldn’t believe what I saw.  Yeah, it was definitely broken, and one part was pushed forward and the other pushed back towards my back.  Yuck.  He noted that I also had several broken ribs.  He said I would most likely need surgery and had a Dr in his group that he recommended for the surgery.  When I asked about recovery and he said that I could probably start doing ‘light strength training’ six weeks post surgery, I asked him if swimming 2.4 miles would be considered ‘light’, and he said ‘absolutely not’.  And that was it.  IMAZ was officially out.  So I moved my thinking forward and decided I would just focus on recovery and that was all I could do at this point.  There wasn’t even a small chance of IMAZ happening anymore.

The next day I met with his partner, Dr. O, where he looked at my x-ray and explained what was torn/broken (I broke my left clavicle, a few ribs and I tore several ligaments) and his recommendation, which was surgery to put in a plate.  I agreed to the surgery because he said without the plate the bone would most likely heal with a huge bump.  No thank you.  He responded and said that he wanted to operate the next day at 7:30a.  Woah.  Really?  Things were moving fast.

Before I knew it I was headed to the hospital for surgery Tuesday morning and getting prepped in the pre-op room.  After the big shot they gave me to knock me out, the next thing I knew I was being wheeled out of surgery and back into my pre-op room (I’m sure the name isn’t pre-op because I went back after surgery, but let’s just go with that). JMR and my mom were waiting for me and as soon as I seemed to be fully awake we went home to my parents house where I was staying for the rest of the week.  Other than being pretty uncomfortable for the rest of the week it was pretty uneventful – I slept a lot and didn’t eat much.  Not very exciting.  Finally on Saturday JMR picked me and Patrick up to go back to my place.  Home at last, hooray!

My view for the first four days after surgery. Note the special 'non slip' socks my mom wanted me to wear.

The first week after surgery I only worked half days because I was still in a lot of pain and was still really, really tired and worn out.  The following Monday (two weeks post surgery) I went for my post-op visit.  Dr. O said I was healing fine, they took out my stitches (I had regular stitches and also dissolvable ones, they took out the regular ones) and I also got the good news that I could now drive and shower!  Hooray!  Taking baths and washing my hair in the sink for the past two weeks was not as much fun as it sounds.  Plus as much as I enjoyed being driven to and from work (and as grateful as I was), it was nice to have that independence back.  I was also cleared to ride the stationary bike (my trainer at home is too wobbly and using only one arm to get on and off isn’t safe), do the elliptical and walking.  Hooray!  However that week was also my first week back to working full-time so by the time I got home at night I was too tired to hit the gym. 😦

This past weekend and week (3 weeks post surgery) has been much better and I even managed to walk a 5k on Sunday!  I also went to a spin class after work on Tuesday (well, modified, I won’t be able to stand up, but it’s better than the boring gym bicycle), and oh man did that kick my butt.  My sling was also drenched in sweat, pretty gross.  Note to self, I’m going to need to buy a second one just for working out!

My next appointment is November 4th, so until then my posts will be pretty much uneventful as far as workouts go, since I will mostly be doing the stationary bike and walking.  I am baffled that I was cleared to do the elliptical?  Sounds dangerous…I could just see myself losing my balance and falling off since I only have one arm to hold on. 🙂

Phew!  So now I’m all caught up finally after a long hiatus from posting!

Redman Half 2013 Race Recap: Part I

Warning: This is a very, very long post.  You might want to make sure you are sitting down and have a beverage nearby…

As sad as I am to say, my training has officially stopped after Redman.  I crashed on the bike 5 miles in and then my race was over.  There’s the short story.  Read on if you want to read the full race day recap….

Pre-Race:

We arrived in OKC around 5p and immediately went to the race site to pick up our packets and check in our bikes.  Other than getting completely lost trying the find the hotel afterwards, it was pretty uneventful.

Lola checked in and ready to race!

Race Day:

I ate my usual banana, eggs and Larabar and we headed off to the race site.  Nothing eventful to note other than that it was FREEZING.  54 Degrees to be exact.  I was more than happy to put my wetsuit on (although I have no idea what expression I was making)!

Wetsuit

It’s pretty serious business squeezing into that thing, but I guess need to practice smiling while putting on my wetsuit  🙂

The Swim: 41:03

I got a little panicky at the beginning of the swim (seems to be a new theme this year), but then I settled in and got comfortable.  It was weird to actually swim as last year the water level was so low that we started pretty far out and even then there were many places you could touch the bottom while swimming.  Soon I was nearing the shore and running to the wet suit strippers.  As I crossed the timing mat, I was really surprised to see that I swam a whole minute and a half faster than last year, since I swam a bit more last year than this year, so I was proud of that tiny 1:30 improvement (ha).

T1: 3:00

Pretty uneventful, I put my socks and bike shoes on, debated wearing gloves and decided to not, put my helmet and sunglasses on and was off.  Two minutes faster than my T1 last year!  I was off to a great start between my swim and transition!

Bike: DNF

Then I was off on the bike!  Right away something felt weird with my bike…I was putting a lot of effort into pedaling and only going 10mph.  EVERYONE was passing me within the first mile.  It was frustrating and confusing.  Did I not eat enough for breakfast?  Was I not hydrated?  What was going on?  Finally after another 5 minutes of huffing and puffing and getting nowhere fast, I hopped off my bike to check and see if my brakes were rubbing.  Rubbing they were!  I quickly adjusted the front brakes, hopped on my bike, and whooo!  Off I went!  18, 19 mph felt great and easy.  I was hoping that would be the only drama I would have on the bike for the day.

Thinking back to my concern of not having eaten enough before the race, around mile 4 I decided to eat part of a honeystinger waffle.  After eating half, I took a swig of water, proceeded to go through an intersection when suddenly the guy in front of me randomly crashed to the left and sent a cone rolling to the right.  I tried to assess my best option, but since I was still going pretty fast (22mph according to my Garmin), I tried to just quickly avoid him and the cone by going in between them.  Sadly I am not a bike handling rockstar and still managed to clip part of the cone and went flying.  Or tumbling.  Or rolling.  I honestly have no idea what happened, but I opened by eyes and my bike was on top of me and I was laying on my right side.  I laid there for a minute and could hear a lady and man asking if I was still clipped into my pedals and trying to move my bike.  Then I started to get up, I felt ok, mostly just really shaken and then for some reason touched my left shoulder and knew something was wrong. I couldn’t put my finger on it, but when I touched my left shoulder it just didn’t feel right.  Was the bone missing?  No way, it hurt but not how I would think if something was broken, so I figured it was just out of socket.  I yelped “I need an ambulance!” and the officers at the intersection radioed an ambulance.

The man who had crashed in front of me seemed to be in ok shape and helped me walk over to the side of the road to get out of the way of the cyclists racing by.  He also moved Lola over to the grass to be safe from getting hit as well.  It turned out that his prescription sunglasses had cracked when he crashed so he was pulling out of the race also.  As I stood there thoughts were flying through my head.  I couldn’t believe that this was happening.  I actually crashed…and of course it was the first race my parents were watching me race.  They drove 7 hours so I could crash 5 miles into the bike.  I was beside myself.  Eventually a SAG guy came by and offered to take my bike back to transition.  At first I readily agreed and was happy knowing my bike would be safe…but then another part of me was thinking…what if the EMT could just pop my arm back into the socket and I could continue?  Is that a possibility?  I eventually agreed and he took my bike and by the time EMT had arrived my shoulder was REALLY hurting.  I couldn’t seem to find a position that didn’t hurt so I just let it dangle and I held it with my right arm.  I guess even if they could put it back into the socket, I didn’t want to continue, I was in a lot of pain at that point.

The EMT techs put me up on a stretcher and hoisted me into the back of the ambulance.  Once again I just kept thinking….was this really happening?  I closed my eyes a couple of times hoping it was just a really bad dream.  The tech riding in the back with me immediately started an IV port and gave me pain meds which helped, at least it wasn’t hurting as much.  Off to the hospital we went (no sirens and we waited at stop lights?  Really? I guess perhaps if I was gushing blood it would have been a different story) and when I arrived they took my vitals and took off my soaking wet bike shoes and socks.  I was uncontrollably shivering at this point because my race kit was still wet from the swim and hadn’t dried yet.  Combine anxiety and being cold and I was one uncontrollably shivering mess.

Next the x-ray tech came to get me to take images of my shoulder.  As I stood there while he was taking the images I heard him mumble, ‘Hmm…that looks like a broken clavicle’ and upon hearing that, I felt the blood drain from my face and thought I was going to throw up.  Broken Clavicle.  No no no.  Dislocated shoulder sounded like easy fixable, quick recovery….broken bones, not so much.  Was IMAZ in jeopardy?!  I started crying as he helped me hobble back to my room.  Shortly after, the ER Dr came into my room and said he had reviewed my x-rays.  It was definitely a broken clavicle and I would possibly need surgery because it was so close to my shoulder.  I immediately burst into tears.  Several of the staff had been asking me questions to help pass the time when I first got there and IMAZ had come up, so they knew why I took the news so badly, however the Dr didn’t really say much else other than I was going to be in a lot of pain for the next week or so.  Thanks.

It finally occurred to me that at least an hour had passed since the crash my parents and JMR still hadn’t arrived.  I thought that surely the race would have contacted them when they called in my bib # as DNF and had transported my bike back.  Isn’t that the point of an Emergency Contact?  Fortunately one of the nurses let me use their phone and I called my dad’s cell phone.  He answered and asked why I was calling him?  I tried to calmly tell him what happened and where I was without bursting into tears, and he said they would be on their way.  Soon they arrived, JMR coming into the room first with tears in his eyes and my mom and dad following also with teary eyes.  They all gave me hugs and then we waited for me to be discharged.

After getting discharged, we went back to the hotel so I could change into dry clothes (well shorts, there was no way I was getting my tri top and sport bra off…I would worry about that later) and then ended up going back to the race to get my bike and gear and also cheer on the rest of my tri club friends.  I even managed to go to dinner with them afterwards.  I’m not going to lie, without the strong percocet they gave me at the hospital, I probably never would have left my hotel room to begin with. 🙂

Waiting to cheer on my friends!

Waiting to cheer on my friends!

However the next day was a different story, when I woke up my entire body hurt and even though I had pain medicine the ER Dr sent me home with, it was not as effective as what they gave me in the hospital. This was going to be a fun drive home (JMR was driving, thank goodness).  However, I knew I was lucky and the crash could have been MUCH MUCH worse than it was.

10 Weeks to go…Weekly Recap

Getting down to single digit countdown of weeks before the race!  With a three-week taper that means I really only have about six more weeks of training, yipes!

Week of 9/9/13:

Monday: Planned rest day, but ended up doing the swim missed from Sunday

Tuesday: 3000m swim, wore my waterproof ipod and it really made the time fly!

Wednesday: Brick, didn’t have time to drive to my usual park so once again it was done on the trainer!  Got in some good intervals and then averaged 7:26 on the 2 mi run!

Thursday: 1 hr run…which got cut to just 35 minutes.  My legs felt heavy, my head felt light and I just felt exhausted.  Was wondering if it was post fatigue from the weekend that finally caught up with me?  Moved planned swim to Friday.

Friday: Easy 1 hr trainer ride and still felt exhausted.  Took a half day from work, tried to nap and then headed to the pool, feeling more tired than before my ‘nap’.  Got all of my gear out, locked up my locker and headed to the showers when I realized I was still wearing all of my clothes.  Argh.  I really was out of it… so I took it as a sign to head back home and rest.  No swim for me.

Saturday: 3 hour ride, followed by 30 min run.  Once again, my legs felt DEAD!  I wasn’t as tired as I was on Thursday and Friday but still didn’t feel right.  Finally the last 30 minutes of the ride my legs seemed to loosen up, and my run after felt good, but good grief, it was frustrating.

Sunday: 10 mile run which was also very very slow… averaged 10:30 which given the weather (it was cool out!) and the semi-flat route, was pretty pokey.  I emailed my coach about feeling so sluggish and if it really could be from the big week last week.  She didn’t think so, but mentioned to make sure I was resting  and eating enough. Then it hit me… I had been really watching/cutting calories over the week to try to be a little leaner for Redman the following week.  So much that one day I had 500 extra calories to eat to still be in a 500 calorie deficit for the day (I track my calories/exercise on myfitnesspal, so it was easy to go back and review my totals)!  I was trying to really cut out starchy carbs (bread, rice) and in the process just wasn’t hungry enough to eat enough calories since I was eating a lot of protein.  Bring on the healthy fats!  After coming to that realization, I ate a ton on Sunday (and some bread) and felt much better by Sunday evening.  Hoping to be better about that this week!

Total Training Hours: 9:47, low compared to the planned 11:45, but now that I have my nutrition figured out, I shouldn’t be missing any workouts due to lack of energy!

This current week is race week (Redman 70.3 in OKC) so I have a pretty light training schedule!  Hooray!  However, as you can see, I’m already practically halfway through my next week of training when posting this… even with a ‘light’ training schedule, I’ve still been busy….busy and nervous for Redman 70.3 on Saturday!!!!  I did this race last year and it’s my third 70.3, but for some reason I’m really having some serious pre-race nerves!  Hopefully they go away by tomorrow or Friday or I’m going to be a wreck!

Off to go pick up my bike from getting tuned up for Saturday!

11 Weeks to go…Weekly Recap

It’s kind of strange typing ’11 weeks to go’ since that’s where I was last week, but really today I’m 10 weeks out!  Not sure why I never really noticed that 🙂

Yesterday two of my tri club friends, including SS who I’ve trained with quite a bit this summer, both completed their first Ironman at Ironman Wisconsin.  While I was training yesterday in the heat and feeling tired from my long ride on Saturday, I just kept thinking of them as inspiration to keep moving.  In the early evening when I checked their splits to see where they were on the course, I got goosebumps every time a saw another new split, meaning that they were that much closer to finishing.  I stayed up and watched them both cross the finish line on Ironmanlive, even watching from home I got teary-eyed!  Just knowing how hard they had both trained and to see them finish got me a tad more emotional than I realized.  It also made me that much more excited for November 🙂

This week was a tough week!  For once I REALLY felt like I was training for an Ironman.  Don’t get me wrong, training hasn’t been easy, but I could compare it to my training for the Redman half last year…now I’m getting into new territories of training I haven’t done before!

Monday – Rest day, hooray!

Tuesday – Didn’t get up in time to swim (moved to Sunday) and ran 6.5 miles after work.  It was an interval workout but my stomach wasn’t thrilled so I didn’t go as hard as I probably could have… GI issues are the worst!

Wednesday – Patrick was finally getting his teeth cleaned that day, so I was up early to drop him off at the vet, and then picked him up after work, which meant I didn’t have time to drive out to my usual park where I do my Wednesday bricks.  So, a trainer ride it was.  Sigh.  1.5 hours on the trainer (whoo!  It was a tough workout since I didn’t have to worry about oncoming bikes, cars or wildlife, I could really push the pace/intensity) followed by a 2 mi run.  My pace is still picking up, averaged 7:36 for both miles!

Thursday – I had an early meeting at work, so I decided to try to run/swim after work.  Swam 2,700 yards and by the time I got home, I was wiped.  Ugh, the run wasn’t going to happen.  Two a days are just going to have to be done in the AM and PM, no doubling up.

Friday – up early for an easy 1 hr spin on the trainer, off to work and then ran a very slow 6 miles that I missed on Thursday.  Weird things were hurting that haven’t hurt before… my left knee and my right glute… bring on the stretching and foam rolling!  After the run JMR and I went to check out a small local art fair nearby and also grabbed a late dinner at a Mexican restaurant in the neighborhood.

Saturday – So… I was going to ride 80 miles in Columbia, IL with a friend, but then I heard about a charity ride a few club members were doing that day in Trenton, IL, which featured a 62 and 100 mile rides.  At first I thought 100 was out of the question because my coach had 5 hours on my schedule, which would be around 80 miles, but I texted her to get her thoughts and she said to go for the 100!  I was giddy when she responded, my first century ride!  I was also happy to be riding somewhere other than Columbia where I have been doing most of my long rides.  I was up at 4:45 to eat breakfast and pack up my gear/bike, met up with the rest of the tri clubbers at 6a who were also riding at 6a and caravaned to Trenton, IL for the ride.

I was nervous and tired, I hadn’t slept very well the night before because I was worried about oversleeping but also about the ride in general… the distance and the fact that I would be riding the last 50 miles solo, since everyone else was riding the 62 mile route.  I knew there would be other people out on the course and SAG support, so I really wasn’t going to be alone, but the thought of riding by myself on roads I wasn’t familiar with was still a bit scary.  Plus, how would my legs handle the extra 20 miles?  I guess I would just have to find out.

The first 50 miles went ok, we rode at a very conservative pace… around 14.5mph (I had to stop a couple times in the beginning because I was having front brake issues) and because there were rest stops almost every 10 miles, everyone decided to stop at each one, so not only were we going at a nice pace but we were also taking quite a few breaks.  Good and bad, I wanted to keep moving while it was still cool out, but I also was glad to be taking it easy.

When it was time for us to part at mile 50, I wished the rest of the group good luck, and they did the same to me and I was off, 50 more miles!  I actually felt great, my legs felt good and my energy levels felt high.  As far as ‘energy’, aka nutrition went, I had concocted one bottle with 3 servings of Infinite (750 cals), the bento box on my bike had 2 honey stinger chews (160 cals each, was only planning on eating one, but had an extra in case) and I had another ziplock baggie with 3 more servings of powdered Infinite in my back pocket.  1660 calories, which if I finished in seven hours, that should be around 240 calories an hour.  Ok, enough of babbling about my nutrition… I just get pretty darn picky/exact about it, so I had to include it 🙂

I was able to pick up the pace a bit and over the course of the rest of the ride and I could see my average rising, which made me happy!  I finally got to an avg of 15 mph, which I was pumped about…until I realized I hadn’t seen any green arrows on the road (the 100 mile course was marked in green arrows).  I kept riding for a bit…slower than before, until I realized I should probably just turn around and go back to the last green arrow I saw.  Sure enough I had made up that it was a left turn arrow, instead it was a straight arrow, meaning to keep going straight ahead.  Argh.  I only added an extra 3 miles, but man, every extra mile just seems like a lot when you are already doing 100!

Along the way I stopped at two rest stops, and after the second one I had around 20 miles to the finish, so I decided to skip the last stop and to just. keep. going.  I was a tad sore from sitting on my seat, my neck was a bit achy from being in aero and my legs felt ok, but in general I was ready to be done!  As I got closer I heard my watch beep and saw it display 100.0.  I smiled and gave myself a little pat on the back for making it to 100 and then went on to finish the final three miles.

Before I knew it I was turning left into the parking lot and hopping off my bike!  I was tired, but I was happy!  I looked at my watch and I had been riding for 6 hours and 50 minutes. Lordy!  That didn’t even take into account the stopping/rest breaks… we started at 7:30a and it was 3:30p when I finished!  What a long day!  I wore my short sleeved jersey to avoid my fun sunburns I had gotten earlier this summer and overall did a good job from being burned, but did manage to once again, miss a spot.  Darnit.  Other than that, I would say that the ride was a success!!

Garmin strap and Road ID bracelet.  Lovely. Taken during Mexican food round #2

After checking in with the volunteers to let them know that I finished (they had a special sheet for the 100 mile riders since there were so few of us to make sure we all made it back safe), I hopped in the car for a 50 minute ride back to Saint Louis.  Or so I thought.  I made it to exit 3 on the Illinois side to hit bumper to bumper traffic…. that was after driving for 30 minutes… then I spent another HOUR going FOUR miles to cross the bridge!  AN HOUR!  Did I mention that it only took 45 minutes from my house to get there?!?! After all of that riding the last thing I wanted to do was to sit in traffic.  My patience had run out around mile 95 so this was very trying.  I did finally cross the bridge and it was smooth sailing after, but I definitely said more than a few colorful phrases while sitting in traffic.

I finally got home a little before six, unpacked, hopped in the shower and then JMR and I were off to go see another art fair, this one much larger with artists from all over the US.  We walked around for 2.5 hours, until it started to rain, however we were also finishing up seeing the last few booths.  My legs were oh so tired!  I wanted to wear compression sleeves on my legs so they would be a little more recovered for my long run on Sunday, but I just couldn’t brave how awful they would look with the sundress I was wearing 🙂 (I had heat rash on my legs where my bike shorts ended, so I had a nice red ring around both legs, so shorts were out).  The wardrobe issues training has caused me!

We grabbed a late dinner at, ha, another nearby Mexican restaurant (we made ourselves promise we wouldn’t have mexican again for a while 🙂 and I was in bed by 11:30.  Out cold.

Sunday – I woke up at 7:30a ready to get my 13 mile run done, until I heard a loud crash and realized it was storming outside.  Ugh.  Which also meant that my pool was closed since they close it when there is a storm in the area (I guess because it has glass windows?).  Back to bed I went and I finally got up around 9:30 since I couldn’t sleep anymore.  I uploaded my Garmin data for the week and updated my trainingpeaks schedule (where my coach lists my workouts and I update it with what I have completed).
Finally around noon it had stopped raining, so JMR and I drove to Forest Park to get our long run done.

Oh lordy.  My legs were tired… between the long ride and walking around Saturday evening, they felt anything but fresh.  As did my attitude.  I wasn’t super grumpy, but I wasn’t happy to do this run.  I just really dislike getting such a late start on long runs since it eats up most of your day, but we really didn’t have a choice.  Off we went….the first mile at an 11 minute pace…the second around a 10…and then my legs finally woke up.  We were averaging around 9:30/9:45 for the rest of the run and it felt a bit tough, but manageable.  JMR dropped off at mile 12 since that’s what was on his schedule and I trudged on to finish my last mile.  I’m not sure why it was so tough, maybe because I was running solo?  But it was a tough mile, and finally I was headed back to the visitor’s center and my watch beeped at 13 miles.  Phew!  Done!  Boy was I was a sweaty mess!  My shorts were actually DRIPPING wet, so much that I could wring them out.  Gross.  I haven’t sweated that much while running… ever, I think.  I try to add photos to my posts to make them more interesting, but I’ll spare you a picture of that.

After the run, I still managed to have a somewhat productive day… laundry, cleaning and  cleaned out my fridge (it was a long overdue task… pretty yucky).  I also ‘cooked’ dinner… well, if you count spaghetti as cooking, which I do because I added ground beef to the sauce and I also made my own ‘spaghetti’ noodles with zucchini.  Pretty sophisticated 🙂 JMR prefers regular old noodles, no fun.

My 'noodles' for lunch the next day, once you heat them in the microwave for two minutes they really do have a noodle consistency!

My ‘noodles’ for lunch the next day, once you heat them in the microwave for two minutes they really do have a noodle-like consistency!

Random tidbit about my ‘cooking’, I eat eggs with veggies for dinner a lot because they’re super easy to make and when I get done with my workouts at 7p, cooking a fancy schmancy meal does NOT sound like fun.  I hope I don’t develop an allergy to eggs or I don’t know what I’ll do!

I was finally in bed by 10:30 and it would have been earlier if I didn’t stay up to watch my friends cross the finish line – but it was totally worth it though!!

Today is a rest day, but because I missed my swim last Tuesday and was afraid I would drown if I did it after my run yesterday (my legs were dead), I squeezed the 2500 y swim in today and took it very easy.

Total Training Hours: 15:39…. getting up there!

Headed to bed in a bit!

12 Weeks to go…Weekly Recap

Phew!  Time really is flying… just a quick post to recap my 8/26 week of training (sorry, it’s boring with no pics!)…

Monday – Rest day

Tuesday – 1 hr (6.5 mile) tempo run…in the heat!!  It was so super hot out! I guess it’s good training for Redman though 🙂

Wednesday – 1.5 hr ride/2 mile brick.  Got in 25 miles on the bike and my run was ok, but the heat really slowed down my pace a bit.  After the ride my mom, dad, aunt and uncle met up with me for dinner at the Lakehouse restaurant in the park we rode at (they rode together and I did my fun interval training around the park).

Thursday – 1 hour aerobic run followed by a 2850 y swim

Friday – 1 hr boring spin on the trainer.  I’m going to have to figure out how to make it interesting again, because as it gets darker out earlier, I’m also going to have to move my Wednesday brick rides inside too 😦  That or get to work super early so I can leave by 4!  Although probably by October, that won’t help much either…..so get used to seeing this fun view 2x a week!

Saturday – Long ride, was originally supposed to be a hilly ride, but the only group I could find to ride with was riding flats but longer than the distance I had on my schedule, so I figured it was a good trade off.  Not ideal, but riding solo isn’t an option for 3+ hr long rides.  78 miles in the heat followed by a pitiful 1 mile run.

After the ride on Saturday JMR and I headed over to T and her husband A’s place for bbq and hanging out poolside.  The other girls, PT and SS, were also there so it ended up being an afternoon/evening of everything Ironman/triathlon.  T had so many tips and stories from Ironman Louisville which led to more discussion and before we knew it, it was 9p and JMR and I had to call it a night.  I was wiped from my ride in the heat and ready for bed!  Plus, I think that was a bit too much Ironman discussion for JMR 🙂

Sunday – I slept in and JMR and I finally started our long run at 10a.  With like 120% humidity.  Ok, fine, not that much obviously, but it was around 95 degrees when we finished.  It was a tough, hot and hilly run, but we managed to get in all 11 around a 10:30 pace, which I was happy with considering there were some parts that I just wanted to walk.  Like I said before, good Redman training!!

After the run, we collapsed on my living room floor, we went to REI for a few items, JMR wanted a handheld water bottle and I needed to stock up on gels and bike tubes.  Then we stopped for lunch and headed to my pool to people watch.  Sadly it wasn’t very crowded by the time we got there, but it was still nice to relax!

Monday – rest day.. lounging on the couch…. and then to my parents house for dinner.

Total Training Hours: 12:48

I did miss one swim, but because of the longer ride on Saturday, I was only around 25 minutes short of the planned time.  Not too shabby, but no more missing swims if I want to actually survive the 2.4 miles in November!  This week my coach has 14:45 training hours planned…she’s not messing around with my training anymore!

13 Weeks to go…Weekly Recap

Oh boy, I figured I better post the past two weeks workouts/training before I got three weeks behind!  Plus, I still need to finish my race report for TriGreen!

With 14 weeks to go, I managed to get in most of my workouts with the exception of two swims and a run.  For some reason in my mind, skipping a swim seems like the least awful of the three disciplines to skimp on.  I know… I know… I need to get in the darn pool!

Week of 8/12:

Monday – rest day

Tuesday – 45 min run

Wednesday – Brick: 1:30 bike/ 2mi run

Thursday – 1 hour run, 2650 y swim

Friday – Easy 1 hr trainer ride

Saturday – 3:40 ride, started too late, wasn’t able to fit 40 min brick in

Sunday – Woke up feeling icky and 7 mi run kept getting pushed back until I realized it wasn’t happening

Total Training Hours: 9:05 😦  Oh boy.  Mucho lighter week than planned.  Not even the volume for a Half Ironman.  Ouch.

The following week was a bit better, but I still missed a couple of swims:

Week of 8/19:

Monday – I was hoping to squeeze in my missed ‘long run’ from Sunday but between cleaning my house and packing for my trip (leaving Tuesday am for a training course for work) before I knew it, it was 8p and the run wasn’t happening.  I need to really plan better… mornings shouldn’t have the option of sleeping in (until 7a) any more.  I love my bed, but missing workouts is starting to not be cool.  Side note, I found it pretty amusing that more than half of my carry-on bag was workout clothes rather than work clothes. Ha.

Tuesday – Hit the road, checked into the hotel and went for a 6.5 mi run. In 93 degree weather.  It was hot.  I got it done.  Felt a little bit of redemption for my missed run on Sunday

Wednesday – Ok, so the plan was to swim in the pool using these (you put the velcro straps around your ankles and then tie yourself to the railing so you swim in place). I was pretty darn pumped about them, despite how silly I would look.  Swimsuit, goggles, swim cap…even my waterproof iPod were packed.  One minor detail….the pool was a freaking water park.  Slide, waves, basketball hoops….yeah, swim wasn’t happening.  Darn.

Awesome slide and waves...not so awesome for swimming in place.

Awesome slide and waves…not so awesome for swimming in place.

I had planned to get up early and run on Thursday but figured I would run after training instead and pack in the am.  6.6 miles done in an hour.  Boom.  Getting my speed back!

Thursday – Travel day/rest day.  Due to my flight getting delayed, I got home around 12:30.  Thank goodness I took Friday off.

Friday – woke up around 9 and hit the road on my bike for a 1:30 ride…boy was the road I ride on the weekends busy.  Super busy… after 50 minutes I was on my trainer at home (and safe) for an additional 40 minutes, followed by a 2 mi run.  After meeting JMR for lunch, I headed to the local outdoor 50 meter pool to swim….drumroll….3100 meters!  Longest swim ever (well, maybe since swim team when I was younger…but since I can’t remember, it doesn’t count!).

Saturday – Impromptu rest day – Today PT and I were headed to Louisville to cheer T on while she raced her first Ironman.  I was going to run, but ran out of time (ha) when PT and I realized that Louisville was an hour ahead and if we were going to meet T and her family for dinner, we had to hit the road an hour earlier than planned.  Bummer (we did make it on time, PT is an awesome driver)

Sunday – IRONMAN LOUISVILLE!!  Ok, this section deserves its own post, so I will be writing a separate one shortly (I promise!  It will happen!), The day involved lots of cheering, bike riding (3+hrs….I counted three of them in my training… probably not exactly super intensive though, but I missed my ride that weekend), and a speedy 10 mile run while T was on the bike.  A late, late, night, but a fun, fun day.

Total Hours: 10:11… still not where I need to be.  I blame those two swims I had to skip, almost 2 full training hours.  Pfft (excuses…excuses…)

So that wraps up the last two weeks….which means…. OMIGODIMAZISTHREEMONTHSAWAY….. I thought that IMLou would pump me up, but honestly, it freaked me out!  So many people on the run looked so rough… and it really is such a long day…. I have faith in my coach, but that still doesn’t help my natural tendency to freak the heck out.  Talk about lighting some fire under my feet… these next twelve weeks = FOCUS!!  I have a little over 13 hours of training this week and I’m going to kick its butt.  Yeah, you heard me…I’m doing all of my swims!! (although I only have two this week).  Off to bed!  Early swim tomorrow am!!

A New Milestone!

Just a quick post to mark a running ‘milestone’ in my training this year! (I hope I don’t jinx myself now!)

Tuesday I ran the farthest I’ve run all year…in fact, since October 2012!  9 whole miles!!  It wasn’t pretty…. granted the heat index was 93 when I started….and it didn’t feel perfect…my right hip had a few twinges, but I got it done!  My average pace was around 10 minutes, which is much slower than my long run pace last year, but I’ll take it!  I was good and had my protein shake afterwards, did lots of stretching and drank lots of water.  I also slept in compression sleeves and the next day I felt pretty darn good!

The rest of the week has been filled with my usual workouts, brick workout Wed pm at a local nearby park, swim Thurs am/ run Thurs pm, and swimming after work tonight (usually swim Tues am, but things got moved around due to my long run being on Tuesday).  Also, my weekend brick will probably be the shortest it’s been all season due to having an Olympic race on Sunday – TriGreen!  I’m really excited to race it since I did it for the first time last year and am hoping to see some improvement, although my running isn’t nearly as strong as it was this time last year…hopefully at least the bike will be faster!  (last year’s TriGreen recap)

My Garmin has also been having battery issues so after calling support twice last Friday, they sent me a refurbished Garmin on Monday and it arrived Tuesday!  I used it for all of my workouts this week and so far it seemed to work ok!  I never realized how much I relied on using it!  Such a great tool as far as heart rate, pace…and in the pool…don’t even get me started.  I have issues with counting laps and without it, I would probably do 2x the planned distance because I would be unsure of what number lap I was on and would err on the conservative side and do more.  So happy it arrived!!

Off to a meeting!
